A Minimally Cemented Shallow Crust Beneath InSight

چکیده
Ice and other mineral cements in Mars' shallow subsurface affect the mechanical properties of crust, geologic processes that shape planet's surface, search for past or extant Martian life. Cements increase seismic velocities. We use rock physics models to infer cement from Model results confirm upper 300 m Mars beneath InSight is most likely composed sediments fractured basalts. Grains within sediment layers are unlikely be cemented by ice cements. Hence, any existing nodular formed away grain contacts. Fractures basalt could filled with gas, 2% 98% no more than 20% ice. Thus, ice- liquid water-saturated exist InSight. Any at contacts has been broken impacts marsquakes.

Continental crust beneath southeast Iceland.
The magmatic activity (0-16 Ma) in Iceland is linked to a deep mantle plume that has been active for the past 62 My. Icelandic and northeast Atlantic basalts contain variable proportions of two enriched components, interpreted as recycled oceanic crust supplied by the plume, and subcontinental lithospheric mantle derived from the nearby continental margins. A restricted area in southeast Icelan...

متن کاملCrust and upper mantle discontinuity structure beneath eastern North America
[1] Crust and mantle discontinuities across the eastern margin of the North American craton were imaged using P to S converted phase receiver functions recorded by the Missouri to Massachusetts Broadband Seismometer Experiment. Crustal structure constrained by modeling Moho conversions and reverberations shows a variation of Moho depth from a minimum of 30 km near the Atlantic coast to depths o...
متن کاملRayleigh-wave dispersion reveals crust-mantle decoupling beneath eastern Tibet
The Tibetan Plateau results from the collision of the Indian and Eurasian Plates during the Cenozoic, which produced at least 2,000 km of convergence. Its tectonics is dominated by an eastward extrusion of crustal material that has been explained by models implying either a mechanical decoupling between the crust and the lithosphere, or lithospheric deformation. Discriminating between these end...
متن کاملThe Coin Beneath the Crust: A Pilot Study of Coins from the Mediterranean Coast of Israel
We describe the application of synchrotron X-ray diffraction and neutron micro-tomography to three ancient bronze coins from the Mediterranean coast of Israel. Key questions are whether neutron tomography can contribute to the reading of features on corroded coins by allowing the corrosion crust to be stripped away in cyber-space using surface and volume rendering techniques, and to what extent...
